Ending a marriage is one of the hardest things anyone goes through, and most people arrive not really knowing where to start. Kenton Solicitors explains your options clearly, deals with the process on your behalf, and keeps things as calm as they can be.

We handle the divorce application itself, sorting out the finances, and arrangements for any children. Where matters can be agreed, we work towards that. Where they cannot, we take firm steps on your behalf.

Everything you tell us is confidential, and a first conversation commits you to nothing. Appointments are available at our Kenton Road office in person, by telephone, or by video call, Monday to Saturday.

What We Handle

Our Divorce Services

The divorce itself is only part of it. We deal with the finances and the arrangements for children alongside it.

The Divorce Application

We prepare and submit the application, deal with the court throughout, and handle each stage through to the final order that formally ends the marriage.

Sorting Out the Finances

Dividing the home, savings, pensions, and other assets. This is separate from the divorce itself and is usually the part that matters most.

Arrangements for Children

Where the children live and how time is shared between you. Most parents reach this by agreement, and we help you get there.

The Family Home

Selling and dividing the proceeds, transferring the property into one name, or deferring a sale until the children are older. Our conveyancing team deals with the transfer.

Responding to an Application

Where your husband or wife has started proceedings, we advise on what it means, what happens next, and how to protect your position.

Separation Without Divorce

Where you want to separate but are not ready to divorce, a separation agreement records what has been agreed about finances and children in the meantime.

How It Works

The Divorce Process — Step by Step

The process is largely administrative and neither of you has to attend court in most cases.

1

Free Consultation

We explain your options and what to expect. Nothing is started until you are ready and there is no obligation.

2

The Application

The application is submitted to the court, either by one of you or jointly. No blame or reasons need to be given.

3

The Waiting Period

A period of twenty weeks follows before the next stage. We use this time to work on the finances and any arrangements for children.

4

Conditional Order

The court confirms it is satisfied the marriage should end. A further six weeks must pass before the final stage.

5

Final Order

The marriage formally ends. We usually advise waiting until the finances are settled before this stage is completed.

What Most People Get Wrong

The Divorce and the Finances Are Separate

This is the single most important thing to understand, and it catches people out regularly. The divorce ends the marriage. It does not divide anything, and it does not stop your husband or wife making a financial claim against you afterwards.

Even years later, a former spouse can bring a claim if the finances were never formally resolved. People have found themselves facing a claim long after they assumed everything was settled, simply because nothing was recorded in the right form at the time.

Getting the finances dealt with properly, and approved by the court, is what draws a line under it. We deal with both together so nothing is left open.

Speak to a Solicitor

No Blame Is Needed

Nobody has to give reasons or accuse the other of anything. The application simply states the marriage has broken down, and it cannot be contested on that basis.

You Can Apply Together

Where you are on reasonable terms, a joint application is often the better route. It avoids one of you being on the receiving end of paperwork and sets a more constructive tone.

Timing the Final Order

We usually advise finalising the finances before the marriage formally ends, as ending it first can affect entitlements such as pension arrangements.

Update Your Will

Divorce affects an existing will, and separation before divorce does not. Our private client team can review yours as part of the same matter.

Who We Help

People We Advise

01

Just Starting to Think About It

Those who have not decided anything and want to understand where they would stand before taking any steps. Many of our enquiries start here.

02

Amicable Separations

Couples who have agreed to separate and want it dealt with efficiently and without the process making things worse.

03

Parents With Young Children

Where arrangements for the children are the priority and both parents want to keep the disruption to a minimum.

04

Where a Business Is Involved

Where one or both of you owns a business, additional care is needed over how it is valued and dealt with.

05

Long Marriages

Separations after many years together, where pensions and the family home are usually the main considerations.

06

Contested Matters

Where the other side is not engaging, is being unreasonable about finances, or is not disclosing what they have.

Areas We Cover

Divorce Solicitors Serving Harrow

We advise people going through separation across Harrow and the surrounding areas of north-west London. A good number of our clients come through recommendation from someone we have acted for before, which in this area of work counts for a lot.

Being local helps. You can come into the office and talk things through in private rather than trying to set out a difficult situation over email. Where the separation also involves the family home or updating your will, our property and private client teams handle that too.

Common Questions

Divorce FAQs

Usually around six to eight months at a minimum. There is a twenty week wait after the application before the next stage, and a further six weeks before the marriage can formally end. Those periods are fixed and cannot be shortened. Sorting out the finances often takes longer and runs alongside the divorce, which is generally the sensible approach.
No. You do not have to give reasons or blame the other person for anything. The application simply confirms the marriage has broken down. Your husband or wife cannot contest the divorce on the basis that they disagree, which removes a great deal of the conflict that used to arise at this stage.
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding we come across. The divorce ends the marriage but divides nothing. Unless the finances are formally resolved and approved by the court, a former spouse can bring a claim against you afterwards, potentially years later. Dealing with both together is what draws a line under it properly.
In most cases, no. The divorce itself is dealt with on paper and neither of you needs to attend. Where the finances or arrangements for children are agreed, those are also approved without a hearing. A hearing is only needed where matters genuinely cannot be agreed, and even then most cases settle before reaching that point.
There are deadlines for responding, so take advice promptly. The divorce itself cannot generally be opposed, but that does not mean you simply accept whatever is proposed about the finances or the children. Those are separate matters and your position needs protecting. Bring the paperwork in and we will go through it with you.
Yes, and many people do. A first conversation is simply about understanding your options, and it commits you to nothing at all. Everything discussed is confidential. Our office on Kenton Road, Harrow is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and telephone and video appointments are available if that is easier.
