Your Route to Settlement — How It Works

You arrive in the UK — or switch into a visa route from within the UK — and are granted leave for a set period.
Extension
Before your leave runs out, you extend your visa to continue your stay on the same route without a gap.
Settlement
After completing the required time in the UK, you apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and settle permanently.
British Citizenship
Once you are settled, you may become eligible to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen.
